Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We have developed and improved a hearing impairment (HI) simulator that allows normal hearing people to experience difficulties in hearing. This aimed at fundamental research to design sound communication environments for everybody inclusive of elderly and hearing impaired people. The HI simulator is based on the gammachirp auditory filterbank accurately reflecting auditory peripheral characteristics which dynamically and nonlinearly responds to sound level change. The simulator analyzes source sounds to synthesize sounds which cancel the compressive characteristics in the cochlea of a normal hearing listener. In this report, we first describe the outline of this HI simulator and its application in educational courses for speech therapists. Then we explain practical implementation of signal processing, high-speed calculation including real-time processing, and server-client system running on a Web browser.
