Impact of Instruction Replacing Laser Fault Attack on Implementation of Pairing Computation on ARM Processor

Abstract(in English) Many studies on fault attack against many software were performed under the assumption that an attacker could skip an instruction. However, it is known that an instruction replacement occurs rather than instruction skip in actual fault injection, and experimental results using a laser irradiation on an AVR microcomputer have been reported. In this paper, we show that instruction replacement using laser is possible even on ARM microcomputer. As an example of attack by instruction replacement, this paper shows an attack of pairing-based encryption implemented on ARM microcomputer. In the existing attack method, it is necessary to perform fault injection multiple times to attack the pairing cryptosystem, but by using instruction replacement, it is possible the attack that directly outputs the confidential information.
