Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Visual prothesis is a medical device that restores lost visual function via electrical stimulation to the visual nervous system using metal stimulation electrodes. Excessive and chronic stimulation via the implanted electrode causes safety and durability problems such as damage to the surrounding tissue and elution of the electrodes. To secure the long-term safety of the stimulation pulses, it is important to understand the changes of the electrode characteristics in vivo. In this study, we implanted a porous stimulation electrode array in a rabbit’s eyeball and obtained electrochemical impedance of active and inactive electrodes. From the result of equivalent circuit analysis, the characteristics of the porous electrode in the living body can be described by a simple equivalent circuit model containing solution resistances and electric double layer capacities.
