Abstract(in English) | Humans simultaneously perceive both position and timbre of sound signals when they listen to them. In the case of sound localization for sound sources on the horizontal plane, interaural level difference and interaural time difference are important factor to determine the sound direction. As for elevation angle localization, the excitation pattern in the auditory peripheral provides basic perceptual cues because they reflect the head-related transfer function(HRTF), whose shapes depend on sound-source location. However, it is unclear what factors in the excitation pattern are used as the perceptual cues. It is reported that elevation angle of a sound source can be controlled by manipulating a notch around 7 kHz, which is called N1. In this study, we focused on perceptual effects of N1’s central frequency and pass-band width not only on sound localization but also timbre in order to probe cues of elevation-angle perception involved in excitation patterns. Thus, we presented broadband noise with a notch having various center frequencies and pass-band widths to investigate how they affect its timbre and localization. Results suggest that simple transition of N1 center frequency is not directly decoded to elevation cues, and does not affect timbre perception. |
