Abstract(in English) | This paper aims to investigate effects of noisy reverberant environments on the perception of non-linguistic information, especially the speaker individuality and vocal-emotion using noise-vocoded speech. The effects of noisy reverberant environments on the perception of linguistic information have been investigated in several studies on modulation perception. However, the effects of these environments on the perception of non-linguistic information have not yet been investigated. In this paper, speaker discrimination and vocal-emotion recognition experiments using noise-vocoded speech under noisy reverberant environment were conducted to investigate these effects. In these experiments, noise-vocoded speech derived from noisy reverberant speech was used as the stimuli. Three reverberation times (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 s) and five SNRs (signal-to-noise-ratios) (20, 10, 5, 0, and -5 dB) were used as the conditions. As results of the experiments, it was found that main effects of reverberation time and SNR are significant respectively and the interactions are not significant. Moreover, it was found there are the noisy reverberant conditions which hardly affect speaker discrimination and vocal-emotion recognition. These results suggest that the effects of noise and reverberation do not affect speaker individuality and vocal-emotion perception, unless extremely long reverberation time (not less than 1.0 s) and low SNR conditions (less than 10 dB). |
