Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | Rolling-shutter-based optical camera communications (OCC) have been studied to increase the symbol rate to a hundred times or a thousand times faster than the frame rate of the image sensor. However, the symbol rate is limited to the same rate with the line rate of the rolling shutter to avoid the difficulty of symbol synchronization. In this study, we propose an asynchronous communication method for OCC at a variable symbol rate based on cycle pattern characteristics of the received symbols. The cycle pattern is uniquely determined by the ratio of the symbol length to the line interval of the rolling shutter. The asynchronous OCC can be achieved with variable symbol rate when the ratio of the line interval to the symbol length is expressed with a ratio of integers. Next, the asynchronous communication method is experimentally verified using various Android smartphones’ image sensors with a frame rate of 30 frames per second. Asynchronous OCC performance depends on the shutter speed (exposure time) of the image sensors. Error-free transmission with a bit error rate (BER) of less than 10-4 is achieved at variable symbol rates from 4.9 to 7.5 kilo-symbols per second using smartphones’ image sensors with a fast shutter speed (short exposure time) in QVGA (320 x 240 pixels) resolution. |
