Abstract(in English) | In this paper, we analyze the bit-error rate (BER) and mutual information characteristics of intensity modulation/direct detection systems and coherent optical communication systems, which are operating in the quantum-noise-limited state. In such systems, the BER and mutual information for various modulation formats can be evaluated as a function of the average number of photons. The channel capacity, which is also called the Shannon limit, is defined as the upper limit of the mutual information; we discuss how the above-mentioned mutual information can approach the channel capacity. These analyses on the BER and mutual information give us the design guideline for the system which realizes larger transmission capacity using fewer photon numbers; hence, they may be important in unrepeated optical transmission systems such as space optical communication systems. |
