Optimization of signal amplitudes for dynamic range of analog-to-digital convertor in digital coherent reception of ultra-high QAM optical signals

Abstract(in English) In the digital coherent reception of ultra-high quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) optical signals, the received amplitudes in the digital domain could be impaired with the bit resolution and the amplitude operation range of an analogue-to-digital convertor (ADC), which is typically used in digital coherent reception. For the quantization errors due to the bit resolution, it is preferable to make the amplitude of the electrical received signals large. On contrary, the amplitude of the received signals impaired with optical noise could be across the ADC operation range, and then it would be clipped. There is the trade-off relationship between the quantization errors and the clipped errors, and then it is essential to optimize the signal amplitude for the bit resolution and the amplitude operation range, namely ADC dynamic range. In this paper, we numerically evaluate the bit-error ratio (BER) performance of 64QAM optical signals when the signal amplitude before ADC is optimized for the dynamic range of the ADC in coherent reception. We calculate the dependence of the required bit resolution on the sampling rate.
