[Invited Talk] DNN Meets Tradition: Collaborative Processing of Traditional Signal Processing Technologies and Deep Neural Networks

Abstract(in English) In recent years, deep neural networks (DNNs) is becoming the main stream of data processing. In fact, DNN-based approaches are the best performing ones in many applications. Have traditional signal processing approaches become old-fashioned in the era of DNNs? In our recent research activities, we found that collaborative processing by the proper combination of traditional signal processing techniques and DNN-based ones can achieve better performance than state-of-the-art DNN-only techniques. For instance, we have been developing an approach that can efficiently pick-up the advantages of the traditional and DNN-based techniques. It is also possible to let DNN-based approaches use traditional approaches in their internal processing. In my invited talk, I will introduce some representative works of such new approaches in our research group particularly on image processing.
