Study on acoustic scattering characteristics of pointhead flounder (Cleisthenes pinetorum)

Abstract(in English) The pointhead flounder Cleisthenes pinetorum, which is one of the major varieties of demersal fish and is known as an active swimmer when it captures prey. When they arise to the middle of the water column, the echo sounders can detect possibly unique echoes from their “flat” bodies that lack swim bladders. So we measured the target strength (TS) of the pointhead flounder (TL=19.9~31.5 cm; Collected in Funka Bay by a rod) using a broadband acoustic system (EK80, 45~90 kHz). And we also calculated the TS using an acoustic scattering model (Distorted wave Born approximation model) and compared with measured TS.
