Temporal Variability of Precipitation Events in Fukuoka, Kumamoto, and Kagoshima in Kyusyu

Abstract(in English) This work quantitatively evaluates the differences in rainfall events in Fukuoka, Kumamoto, and Kagoshima, which are located near a longitudinal line in Kyusyu Island of Japan, to improve the performance of prediction of heavy rainfall events. For this purpose, we classify the rainfall events at three points focusing on the temporal variation patterns identified by hierarchical clustering using the Ward method. The classification exhibits that there are noticeable differences between the patterns in Fukuoka/Kumamoto and in Kagoshima. Classified time variation patterns and differences between the points are expected to provide the useful information for predicting the heavy rainfall events.
