Abandoned Farmland Mapping Using Satellite Data and Machine Learning, and Abandonment Probability Modeling by Field and Geographical Factors

Abstract(in English) Farmland abandonment is quickly increasing in Japan, and it becomes concern on social, economic and environmental issues. In this study, abandoned farmland distribution in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan was estimated by using satellite data and machine learning, and then a farmland abandonment probability model was constructed responding field and geographic factors. Multitemporal Landsat-8/OLI and ALOS-2/PALSAR-2 images together with the support vector machine (SVM) were used for the identification of abandoned farmland. The overall accuracy of the classifier was 92%. A logistic regression analysis showed field shape, irrigation, field slope, soil type and elevation are major factors promoting abandonment both in paddy and upland fields. The potential contribution of the model to regional policy making regarding farmland abandonment was demonstrated by a future prediction of farmland abandonment.
