Abstract(in English) | Collective rhythms in networks of coupled dynamical elements often play important functional roles in real-world systems, such as beating hearts and synchronized power grids. Such networks are generally described by high-dimensional nonlinear dynamical systems. When the collective rhythm of the network corresponds to a limit-cycle orbit of the underlying dynamical system, a collective phase can be introduced along the limit-cycle orbit and the collective rhythm of the network can be described using a simple one-dimensional phase equation. In this talk, it is shown that the conventional phase reduction theory for low-dimensional nonlinear oscillators can be generalized to networks of coupled dynamical systems, where individual characteristics of the elements can be heterogeneous and the topology of the network can be arbitrary. In particular, a set of coupled adjoint equations governing the phase sensitivity functions, which characterize linear response property of the collective phase to applied perturbations, is derived. As an example, collective oscillations in a network of FitzHugh-Nagumo elements with both oscillatory and excitatory characteristics are considered and their synchronization properties, such as entrainment to a periodic input, and mutual synchronization between networks due to inter-network coupling or common noise, are analyzed. |
