Small Footprint Air-gap Multi Fiber Connector

Abstract(in English) Commonly used optical connectors realize good characteristics by using a PC connection technology. However PC connection has some challenges such as an increase of mating force for higher channel connectors and a requirement for careful end face cleaning. To overcome these challenges, we developed a new type multi-fiber connector without PC connection. The mated connectors have an air-gap between their end face. We manufactured prototype 24-fiber multimode fiber connectors based on this technology and they have achieved an average loss of 0.49 dB and more than 38 dB return loss. We also conducted series of reliability tests based on Telcordia GR-1435-CORE and they have achieved less than 0.3 dB loss fluctuation. In this paper, we present the optical characteristics and a reliability test result of developed connector.
