Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Can we communicate distinct emotions from touch? Previous studies in Western culture indicate that some emotions are perceived above chance when the encoder tried to convey emotion by touching the decoder's arm. However, it has not been studied in Japan, where touch is not very common in everyday communication. In this study, we conducted an experiment for Japanese participants, which is almost identical with experiments in previous research. Results showed that some emotions (anger, love, and gratitude) are categorized accurately. In addition to these emotions, several emotions (fear, disgust, surprise, jealousy, and sympathy) are perceived at the level of the quadrant of the two-dimensional space by valence and arousal. Based on these results, we propose a cognitive model of emotion perception from touch.
