Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Past research suggested that the ability to suppress inappropriate information or inhibitory control plays an important role in language comprehension. However, it is still unclear exactly how it helps language comprehension and in what circumstances the ability is called for. We explored the possibility that the suppression mechanism is exerted when an anomalous and incomprehensible interpretation blocks access to an alternative, eventually correct, analysis. The results from an eye-tracking reading experiment and a Stroop test indeed demonstrated evidence for the direct link between participants' suppression ability and processing difficulty in the region where such an incomprehensible interpretation was processed.
