Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | A self-paced reading experiment was conducted to examine how native Japanese-speaking and Chinese-speaking adults process subject referential expressions (“REs”; here, null pronoun, overt pronoun, and repeated name) in discourse. We tested participants on closely translated stimuli and compared raw reading times (RTs) with residual RTs adjusted for length of RE. Results pointed to a cross-linguistic difference in subject-RE preference for a discourse topic: Both RT analyses for Japanese speakers indicated a null-pronoun preference; but for Chinese speakers, only the raw RTs indicated a (null and overt) pronoun preference over a repeated name, suggesting a weaker null-pronoun preference than in Japanese. |
