Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The current study examines second language acquisition of causative/anti-causative constructions in English by Japanese-speaking learners. In the framework proposed by Alexiadou, Anagnostopoulou, and Sch?fer (2006), which states Voice alternation. Causatives (i.e., transitive verbs) include Voice introducing an external argument and Cause introducing a causal relation between a causing event and a caused event denoted by the verbal root and its Theme. On the other hand, anti-causatives (i.e., unaccusative verbs) involve only Cause. We conducted an acceptability judgment task to 23 learners. The results showed that the L2 learners were not accurate on rejecting “unacceptable” anti-causative constructions. We discuss L2 interlanguage grammar in terms of Voice alternation.
