A Proposal of a Wireless LAN Handover Technique for Indoor Remote Controlled Wheelchairs

Abstract(in English) Many efforts are being made on R&D activities of autonomous driving wheelchairs. Autonomous driving wheelchairs are expected to reduce labor for nursing care and to support elderly activities. Our research target is to realize an autonomous controlled wheelchair system with small cost. To achieve this, we thought that centralized control scheme by a control server and utilization of existing wireless LAN infrastructure are the keys. When a wheelchair crosses the boundary of the coverage areas of wireless LANs, communication disruption occurs as the wireless LAN-AP changes. In this research, we have studied a technique to create a seamless communication environment by utilizing plural wireless LAN Access Points. To overcome the problem, we proposed a method based on multipath communication. This paper shows results of implementation of the proposed method and experimental evaluations.
