A Formulation of Gain Margin and Required Power for Closed-Loop Active Load-Pull Systems

Abstract(in English) As a design method for microwave power amplifier, passive load-pull method for obtaining the optimum load impedance is well-known. But, it has some problems such as narrow measurement range due to the loss of impedance tuner. The Active Load-Pull (ALP) system which can solve this problem attracts attention. ALP can be categorized in open-loop type and closed-loop type. The closed-loop type were researched actively, because of its high speed measurement and ease of control of reflected waves. However, closed-loop type has a risk of oscillation. In order to solve the problem, the authors propose a composite ALP system with open-loop and closed-loop. ALP gain margin, required injection power were derived analytically and experiments were carried out. It was confirmed the gain margin depends only on the reflection coefficient to be created. And it was found that the required power depends on the output impedance of the DUT. By comparing the performances of the proposed and conventional ALPs, gain margin was improved 6dB and power requirements was improved 3dB, when injection powers of open-loop and closed-loop is equal.
