Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This study explores the nature of intervention effects L2 learners encounter on the comprehension of raising constructions in English. Based on the data collected from 61 Japanese EFL participants in our experiment using a Truth Value Judgment task (Crain & McKee 1985), we show that together with L1 transfer, a Relativized Minimality (Rizzi 1990, RM) approach can provide a more plausible account for the intervention effects leading to Japanese EFL learners’ difficulty with the raising construction than a performance-based hypothesis. Our conclusion is thus incompatible with the view that Choe & O’Grady (2017) argued for in explaining L1 children’s delayed acquisition of raising constructions.
