High-speed optical modulators based on epitaxially grown (Pb,La)(Zr,Ti)O3 (PLZT) thin films

Abstract(in English) LiNbO3 (LN) based modulators are widely used in optical communications because of its high reliabilities. To satisfy the demands of smaller or integrated devices, new materials with larger electro-optic (EO) coefficients are necessary. In this paper, we describe small and low driving voltage modulators operating at more than 50 Gb/s using our epitaxially-grown PLZT thin films on sapphire substrate. Finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD) is used to design optical waveguide modulators, and finite element method (FEM) is used to design coplanar waveguide (CPW). We fabricated the modulator and confirmed more than 50 Gb/s optical modulation.
