Decoding Covert Spatial Attention using Privacy-preserving Sparse Coding

Abstract(in English) Brain-machine interface (BMI) has attracted much attention not only in biomedical engineering fields but also in ICT human communications. Especially, methods of neural decoding have rapidly developed over the last decade in neuroscience, allowing us to read out the contents of human perception and subjective mental states from measured brain activity patterns. On the other hand, the development of the neural decoding will generate concern about privacy violation. In this manuscript, we propose a secure BMI decoding method based on a sparse coding computation for a covert spatial attention task. It is shown that the secure sparse coding computation enables us to not only protects observed signals, but also have the same estimation performance as that of sparse coding with unprotected observed signals .
