An experimentally faithful model for synchrony in certain fireflies, and its occurrence condition for traveling waves

Abstract(in English) Papua New Guinean fireflies, Pteroptyx effulgens, form traveling wave pattern{s with their flashing lights in a group. In this study, based on an elaborated synchronous flashing experiment (F. Hanson et al., Science, 1971), we propose a novel pulse-coupled oscillators model. First, we numerically analyze formation of traveling wave in the proposed model. Then, we prove the necessary and sufficient conditions for forming traveling waves in one dimensional array and two dimensional array, respectively. Although several synchronous flashing models have been proposed in the literature, our proposed model and resulting theoretical results have not been reported so far.
