Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The purpose of this study is to analyze the idiosyncratic use of “like” as a filler in Japanese conversation by native English speakers. While this transfer from the student’s first language (L1) would normally indicate an error requiring repair (Wong & Waring, 2010), the use of this word, particularly by adolescent American girls, has been shown to have distinct psychological underpinnings and to be bound to the speaker’s cultural identity (Laserna, Seih & Pennebaker, 2014; Eckert, 2008). In analyzing the data taken from an intermediate-level Japanese language class, the first hypothesis is that the students are aware that a filler is called for, but are at a point in their interlanguage ( Selinker,1972) where they can not properly employ the Japanese filler. The second hypothesis is that the use of “like” is related to the protection and maintenance of the speaker’s identities as privileged, American females. This study is also aimed to put in to the practice of designing the research in the Mixed methods both of verifiable and explorable approaches.
