Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | The present study aims to examine how Sentence Construction Familiarity (SCF) (Yokokawa et al., 2017) affects Japanese EFL learners’ (JEFLLs) sentence production during a picture description task. The results show that SCF is moderately related to the production of ditransitive and dative transitive construction in both oral and written production and that JEFLLs tend to produce sentence constructions with a higher SCF, indicating that SCF may affect L2 sentence production. In addition, the study finds that JEFLLs are likely to produce more complete sentences in written production than in oral production. This suggests that cognitive load is applied during conceptualization, the process in which the message to be conveyed in oral production is planned. The findings indicate that there is variation among the sentence constructions produced by JEFLLs. Further, although syntactic constructions in mental lexicon are shared between modalities, preference and accessibility of constructions differ depending on output modality. |
