Practical design of compact and simple equipment for visualization of ultrasound fields using focused shadowgraphy

Abstract(in English) We proposed a focused shadowgraphy technique that visualizes ultrasound fields using an optical technique, and its usefulness was evaluated by visualization of various types of ultrasound fields. In this study, an experimental system was developed using an incoherent light source (LED) and a consumer CMOS camera and used for visualization of a diagnostic ultrasound field. Experimental results showed that use of the LED light source suppresses brightness disturbance caused by light interference. Photographing conditions of the CMOS camera was optimized, elucidating that a longer exposure time with lower ISO sensitivity leads to higher S/N. Signal to noise ratios of the ultrasound field images taken under the optimized condition were 55.8 dB for a conventional CCD camera and 52.2 dB for the consumer CMOS camera, indicating that the CMOS camera has a sufficient image quality for understanding diagnostic ultrasound field. The results confirm that a compact and simple focused shadowgraphy system can be designed using an LED light source and a consumer CMOS camera.
