Design and Analysis of Wireless-Powered Communication Systems with Multiple Frequency Bands

Abstract(in English) Signal-generator-based communication (SGC) and backscatter communication (BC) have been actively studied for wireless powered communication systems (WPCSs). SGC can achieve higher bandwidth efficiency using higher-order modulation while spending high power consumption because of an RF chain. On the other hand, energy consumption of BC is much lower than SGC while the bandwidth efficiency of BC is inherently limited. In this paper, we theoretically analyze the condition where the throughput of SGC is higher than that of BC when multiple frequency bands are available as energy sources and communication channels. We further propose the switching protocol that enables a wireless device to decide the transmission scheme without any feedback from an access point. Moreover, it is shown that communication scheme with the protocol can attain higher throughput than the scheme using either SGC or BC.
