Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) People are more likely to show the left side of their face when asked to broadly express emotions while the opposite is true when asked to hide emotions. This lateral posing bias is known to reflect the left hemifacial advantage for expressing emotions. The present study tested generalizability of the lateral posing bias for expressing and hiding emotions using a naturalistic setting with high ecological validity. We used photographic portraits of gold and silver medalists in combative sports competitions. Overall, gold and silver medalists showed their left cheek to the camera immediately after the medal ceremonies. Notably, this left cheek posing bias disappeared for silver medalists who did not express positive emotions. These results extend the lateral posing bias, which has been investigated mainly at laboratories, to a real world situation, like winning medals.
