Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The long-term rain attenuation statistics of cumulative time percentages are obtained from Ku band satellite signal observations conducted at Osaka Electro-Communication University in Neyagawa, Osaka, during the past 30 years from 1988 to 2017. The long-term statistics for the former 18 years up to 2006 are in very good agreement with the recent ITU-R predictions obtained from the 0.01% rainfall rate. However, the statistics for the latter 12 years after 2006 indicate the cumulative time percentages that considerably exceed those of the ITU-R predictions. The increasing rates of the statistics are not simply explained in term of the increase of propagation path lengths associated with the rise of rain height proportional to recent higher ground temperature, but rather related to the increase of equivalent path lengths due to variations of the horizontal reduction factor and vertical adjustment factor in the ITU-R predictions. This suggests that the scales and densities of precipitating clouds along the satellite propagation paths tend to become larger, caused by the recent frequent occurrence of rain attenuation due to tropical-type rainfall such as shower and typhoon in summer time.
