Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We are living in the age of voice input. The voice assistant or smart speakers are activated by wake words such as “OK Google” or “Hey Siri.” Unlike English speakers, Japanese speakers tend to feel embarrassed or even awkward to say the wake words. This paper argues, based on the framework of the three-tier model of language use (Hirose (2013, 2015, 2016, 2017), that the different attitudes towards the wake words can be derived from a linguistic difference between Japanese and English; the vocatives in the wake words are peculiar and uncommon for the general use of Japanese vocatives.
