[Invited Talk] Sonochemistry, harnessing ultrasound to chemistry

Abstract(in English) The lecture introduces sonochemistry, in which ultrasound is actively applied to chemistry in liquids to ignite unique chemical reactions and also to enhance the reaction rates due to various bubble effects. Ultrasound propagation in liquid medium rather creates bubbles which provide a "field" for chemical reactions than stimulates molecular motions such as vibration or rotation as can be seen under the irradiation of microwaves. These bubbles in oscillation lead to violent collapse of bubbles that produces extremely high temperature and pressure within a small field in liquids. On such conditions, highly reactive chemical species, radicals, are generated to be reacted with chemical species already existing in liquids. Also, there are physical effects such as shockwave and jet flow that enhances cleaning of solid catalyst surface and accelerates catalytic reactions. Both chemical and physical effects come into play in sonochemisty. Some applications of sonochemistry, extraction, coagulation and sonocrystallization are to be introduced.
