Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) English will become an official subject for Japanese 5th- and 6th-graders in 2020. The annual number of English classes will double, and the curriculum will change. As a result, English structure, currently not taught at the elementary school level, will be introduced. This paper suggests Data-Driven Learning (DDL), a methodology previously used with various ages and levels of learners, with which students cooperatively explore language data to inductively understand structure. We overview DDL instruction and its effects, and report on the development of an online DDL site that elementary school students and teachers can use at school and home.
