Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In Japanese schools, unidirectional lessons from teachers and monotonous learning as memorization are commonly done. As a result, student's learning motivation falls and learning outcomes also become low. In this research, wefocused on “competition" in learning and aimed to improve learning motivation by changing the achievement of a virtual rival. The virtual rival is an agent directed as if it is an actual person. In a simple addition task, participants were shown the ranks of themselves and the virtual rival. The achievement of the participants was set to either “catch up" to the rival or “be caught up" by the rival. Then, we examined which type of rank change enhances learning motivation. In addition, “without rival" was also prepared as a control condition. As a result, participants in the “catching up" and “being caught up" conditions answered significantly more questions than the “without rival" condition, and the participants in the “catching up" condition were motivated significantly higher than the “without rival" condition. Therefore, the “catching up" is considered to be the most effective as the type of achievement change.
