Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Nikko is a touristic area not very far from downtown Tokyo. About two hours of train ride takes you from Asakusa Station to Tobu Nikko Station. We have piloted and field-tested low-energy beacon emission devices embedded along the main street from Tobu-Nikko Station to Nikko Toshogu, which is designated as a world history heritage and has finished renovation of its main building quite recently, and implemented smartphone apps for touristic information dissemination activated by those beacon signals. Our initial targets were domestic high school students who visit this area as part of their school field trips and then we tried to revise the touristic material in English, Chinese (Traditional) and Thai, for international inbound visitors. In the process we learned that English expressions for a given point of touristic interest cannot easily be determined uniquely. For instance, 中禅寺湖 is expressed in English as “Lake Chuzenji”, “Chuzen Lake”, “Lake Chuzenjiko” or “Chuzenjiko”, just as some may refer to the same river as “Rio Grande” or “Rio Grande River”. Another kind of difficulty we encountered is how to translate traditional or regional Japanese cuisine into English. In this paper, we report on our initial findings of how local people in the area are dealing with this issue and how international visitors are reacting to those expressions.
