Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We have carried out an experiment to measure and compare the legibility of Web content, with various font sizes, for both the hearing and the hearing-impaired. Font sizes were varied between 8px and 41px, while line height was fixed as 1.5 and character space was fixed as 0.1em. We prepared book reading Web sites, which have almost 2500 to 300 Japanese characters. Subjects were asked to answer questions while reading these Web sites. We measured a percentage of correct answers, time to read content and time to answer questions, impression evaluation (SD evaluation), and a simple legibility question. As a result, the most legible font size was found to be 27px (visual angle 0.70°), which was larger than the browser default size (16px). The legibility score was almost same as the hearing and the hearing-impaired. The time to read content of the hearing-impaired subjects became quicker for the larger font sizes. The time to answer questions, while, became slower for smaller and larger font-sizes. These results may show the cognitive characteristics of the hearing-impaired which was pointed out by the previous research.
