A Performance Evaluation of D2D Relay Communication in 5G systems

Abstract(in English) In 5G systems, resource utilization in small cells with higher frequency band can be improved by using device-to-device (D2D) relay communications. However, in order to satisfy performance requirements of the users, network should collect channel quality information of D2D links, which leads to large signaling overhead in communication resources. In this paper, we evaluate, through system level simulations, the effect of signaling reduction by applying ProSe Function Server (PFS) to reduce the number of users to report the channel quality information to the network. As an example of the results, it is shown that the application of PFS can mitigate the degradation of uplink throughput by more than 55% when the number of the users in the system is 3000. Therefore, the application of PFS is shown to be especially effective for the dense user scenarios.
