Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Swallowing and breathing work coordinately to route air and food bolus. The pharyngeal-muscular incoordination can cause aspiration pneumonitis and respiratory diseases. In clinical practice, it is important to monitor respiration and swallowing simultaneously in order to prevent misswallowing from high-risk patients. With this view, we developed a new deglutition monitoring system using electret condenser microphones. Two sensors installed in a neckband at the lateral and dorsal positions of the neck measured weak physical vibration propagating on the body surface. As a result, we extracted components of respiratory and swallowing sounds, and ballistocardiogram from the signals obtained from the neckband sensors.
