[Invited Talk] Development concept of InP-based photodetectors for commercial optical communication systems

Abstract(in English) Photodiodes (PDs) and avalanche photodiodes (APDs) are indispensable together with laser diodes for configuring information communication systems. The development of device technologies and products has been steadily proceeding as the broadband communication networks have grown. In order to achieve commercialization of PDs and APDs, it does not only satisfy the optical/electrical characteristics and reliability required for each application but also needs to develop with a bird's-eye view for the whole of integration design in a receiver module and the manufacturing cost. Especially, the configuration for optical coupling with signal light and electrical connecting with preamplifier IC directly affects the development concept of photodetector toward improving the performance and simplifying of the receiver module. In this report, focusing on the achievements that we have ever engaged, we introduce some commercialized examples of InP-based PDs/APDs for high-speed networks, and photonic integrated devices for coherent photodetection. I will elaborate on the development concept of each photodetector and the essential technologies to realize each device, and discuss the challenges and future direction.
