Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recent studies confirming that young students? academic abilities are deteriorated, and they have been ranked significantly below expectations not only in Japan but also in the US, as National Institute of Informatics (NII) and Stanford University independently reported, respectively. This deterioration could be linked to cognitive processing which requires attentional resources in various daily-life activities. We investigated students? abilities through an attentional task, note-taking and review processes during lectures, and academic writing. We found that students? who were active in second language (L2) learning significantly performed better in the attentional task. In addition, note-takers with review processes performed better in online quizzes than those who did not perform a proper review. We also found that many students regardless of language used could not produce logical writing.
