Evaluation on performance gain of an SDN-based handover approach in IEEE 802.11p and LTE hybrid vehicular networks

Abstract(in English) Since vehicles present an indispensable transportation in our daily life, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) have become a popular research topic. But vehicles move with fast speed and random route, always incurring frequent changes in network topology. So this paper introduces a seamless handover approach to adapt highly dynamic vehicular environment. We use software defined network (SDN) to manage the forwarding data in VANETs when the handover occurs to keep the transport layer’s connection unchanged, so that the application will perform stably without being affected by the lower layer's changes. To further confirm the gain of performance that our proposal brings about, we also conduct computer simulations from different aspects., and the results show that our proposal brings the performance improvement to the network.
