Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We investigated hiragana letter-sound knowledge using an eye-tracking technique in late 2-year-olds who cannot read hiragana letters. Pairs of hiragana were presented side by side on a monitor with auditory exposure for the target hiragana, and the fixation times for the target stimuli were measured. We confirmed that even though none of the toddlers in this study could read the hiragana letters that were presented as experimental stimuli, they significantly fixated on the target stimuli implying hiragana letter-sound knowledge in late two-year-olds. Additional pair-item analysis revealed that hiragana pairs mi/ma and shi/ko were distinguished from the target to the distracter. Since the reading accuracy of these letters was high in 4 and 5-year children, hiragana letter-sound knowledge may have some influence on subsequent hiragana reading acquisition.
