Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In this paper, a spatial modulation principle is introduced along with its historical background over the past five decades. Mesleh et al. proposed the spatial modulation concept in 2008, which has gained significant interest in wireless communications, while similar index modulation concepts have been proposed for 50 years. Specifically, Slepian proposed permutation modulation in 1965, and Sasaki et al. proposed parallel combinatory modulation in 1991. This paper summarizes the historical contributions devoted to the general index modulation literature.
