Analysis of butt coupling of three-dimensional optical waveguides using propagation operator method based on finite element method

Abstract(in English) In order to evaluate splice loss between di?erent kinds of optical waveguides, we study on the propagation operator method (POM) based on ?nite element method (FEM) that can evaluate re?ected and transmitted ?eld including radiation ?eld just analyzing the boundary of waveguide discontinuities. In this method, FEM with higher adaptability and ?exibility to waveguides geometories is employed to discretize waveguide cross section. POM needs to calculate square root of the characteristic matrix. Thus, Denman-Beavers iterative scheme is applied to approximate the square root matrix e?ectively. In this paper, we analyze three-dimensional waveguide discontinuity problems by full-vectorial method. Numerical results show that the proposed method has a good accuracy and e?ciency in both TE-like and TM-like mode.
