ADI-BPM Analysis of a Spot-Size Converter Using a Curvilinearly Tapered Waveguide

Abstract(in English) This paper clarifies that the length of a spot-size converter (SSC) is sufficiently reduced by introducing a curvlinearly tapered structure. The analysis is carried out using the beam-propagation method (BPM) based on the alternating direction implicit (ADI) scheme. We first investigate the calculation direction of the first step in the ADI procedure in terms of power conservation. It is demonstrated that the first step should be calculated from the direction in which the refractive index remains unchanged along the propagation direction. Next, the SSC is optimized to achieve nearly the same characteristics as the original structure with a linear taper being employed. Special attention is paid to the local taper angle between the waveguide axis and the tangent to the core-cladding interface, since the taper angle is closely related to radiation. It is found that the present curvlinearly tapered profile is consistent with the guideline determined by equating the local taper length to the beat length between the guided and radiation modes.
