Noise reduction of Brillouin gain spectrum using non-negative matrix factorization

Abstract(in English) In strain and temperature measurements using the Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) produced in an optical fiber, the reduction of the noise in the observed BGS is important to improve the measurement performance. The BGS has non-negative value and can be approximated by the superposition of Lorentz-shaped spectra (LSs) with the frequency shift corresponding to the strain or temperature. Noticing these BGS characteristics, we proposed a novel BGS noise reduction method. In the method, the observed BGS is factorized into the basis matrix consisting of LSs and the optimum coefficient matrix is determined. The noise-reduced BGS is reconstructed by their product. Through simulations, the effectiveness of this method is confirmed and the relationship between the frequency interval of LSs used for the basis matrix and the noise reduction, is discussed.
