Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Facial expressions provide primary cues for emotions. We are capable of making some facial expressions deliberately, even if we do not feel a particular emotion. However, genuine emotion can be revealed in the eyes, because the eyes are more difficult to control than the mouth. It has been suggested that Japanese people observe the eyes more than the mouth to recognize emotions, as compared to Americans. This study investigates the relationship between the cultural view of the self and the tendency to recognize emotions through eyes or mouth. Results revealed that the cultural view of the self may affect the tendency to observe the eyes or mouth to recognize specific emotions, rather than there being a general tendency to look for such cues.
