Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We have developed a head mounted display (HMD)-based virtual reality (VR) system for application to baseball and softball batting where the user can experience the highly realistic virtual hitting of a pitched ball thrown in time with the motion of a pitcher avatar. In an experiment we assessed the effect of the pitcher’s motion on the batting timing control of skillful softball batters by manipulating the combination of the motion of the pitcher’s avatar and ball trajectory. We found that the trunk rotation timing was variable and became earlier when a change-up (slow) ball was thrown with the fastball motion of the pitcher avatar, compared with the normal combination (change-up motion and change-up ball). Interestingly, no participants were conscious of such mismatched combinations. This result suggests that expert batters unconsciously utilize information related to the pitcher’s movement in the brain processing when deciding whether or not to swing (“Go/No Go”). Our VR system will provide novel findings as regards athletic performance that were formerly hard to obtain and allow us to elucidate the corresponding neural mechanisms in detail.
