Abstract(in English) A Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on optical waveguides with a thermo-optic phase shifter operates as both optical switch and variable optical attenuator (VOA). The VOA exhibits a different temporal response to the optical switch due to its nonlinear transfer function. We show that the response time of the VOA never exceed twice that of the optical switch for any initial and final attenuation settings
