Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The further improvement of oxygen reduction activity for non-platinum oxygen reduction catalysts is required for the substitution of platinum. In this study, the precursors of Fe/N/C type oxygen reduction catalysts were prepared using a zinc salt as well as 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), Ketjenblack(KB), and iron(II) acetate. The effects of Zn salt addition to the precursors on oxygen reduction activity was investigated by the electrochemical measurements, thermogravimetry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Onset potential, which was defined by 100 μA mg-1 of oxygen reduction current, was 0.882 V vs. RHE for the catalyst made from zinc acetate as well as phen, KB, and iron(II) acetate, whose overvoltage decreased by 39 mV compared to those without zinc acetate. The decrease in phen was suppressed to about 50% in the presence of zinc acetate in the precursor, suggesting that the thermal stability was improved by the formation of a complex between zinc ion and phen. It was suggested that the addition of the zinc salt to the precursors causes the increase in the graphitic and pyridinic type nitrogen species functioning as active oxygen reduction sites.
